Hardwood shredded bark is one of the nicer mulches. I recommend thinning their canopy to let enough light in to support more understory plants. There are no 90-degree or 45-degree angles in nature. Scrape a shallow trench in the compost, drop in the seeds, backfill and stomp with your foot, water well, and wait for the seeds to sprout. Proper watering methods are seldom practiced by most gardeners. But if you’ve tilled the mulch into your soil (and of course we’re talking mulches made out of organic matter here, not rock or pebble mulches) the bacteria and other organisms will sequester nitrogen wherever that mulch is in contact with the soil, even if that’s several inches deep, and your plants’ roots won’t be able to pull any of the nitrogen from the soil, and your plants will become very deficient in nitrogen.
