It’s the holiday shopping season and I would like to chat about buying local. As you have all ready heard, it’s a great idea! In the D.I.Y. jewelry world, less and less items are made, produced or sold here in the United States. Most of the beads, stringing materials and tools are made overseas. I recently purchased myself a set of Tronex. Tronex tools are made here in California and I purchased them through a small local business, Beaducation.com. Now, I could have purchased a variety of different sets from a handful of manufactures and I could have popped onto Amazon to find the cheapest seller, but it felt better to support the small local businesses here in the United States. Not everyone can afford a set of Tronex pliers (I only could because I received my book advance), but you can make the choice to purchase your set at a local bead store in your area. Every time I use my pliers I am happy that I am supporting my local community.

The Bead & Button show was fantastic this year! I attend the show with my Beaducation team. Our booth was beautiful and we had a great time talking with customers and introducing them to our favorite tools. These ladies work hard, and play hard. We worked long days in the booth and spent the evening eating great food, drinking a little and laughing a lot. On Friday I took a class from the talented Richard Salley. I made many pendants using his staple technique to set found objects. I saw so many friendly faces, Andrew from Green Girl, Katie from Fusion Beads, Anne from Craft Fantastic, Becky and Donna from Nunn Design, and so many more. I had a great ending to a awesome week. My friend Christy and I took a leisurely drive back to Minneapolis stopping at antique shops along the way. This was the best B&B ever, I can’t wait until next year!

I have taken many, many classes in the jewelry and spinning communities. One of my favorite experiences was learning from Lexi Boeger also known as Pluckyfluff at her families winery in Placerville, CA. Over two days she opened my eyes to a new way of spinning. She shook me out of my comfort zone and gave me the green light to experiment. Lexi has written 3 books on spinning (the 3rd to be out soon) and has taught all over the world. Her creativity and innovativeness is truly inspiring.

Lexi has taken on a huge endeavor. She is going to restore a a historic barn built in 1850 on the Boeger Winery property into the Pluckyfluff Headquarters. This will be a space for spinners to learn, visit, inspire and relax anytime. It will also house the famous The Giant Skein which is the worlds largest skein of handspun yarn. Pluckyfluff Headquarters will be stocked with fiber, a carding station and a AURA wheel by Majacraft! For more information about this amazing project and to make a pledge click on the video image below.

I am making changes! My jewelry line will be called Everthine Jewelry. As my focus has changed back to my roots I have decided to create a name to differentiate between my yarn and jewelry businesses.

Everthine Jewelry is a tribute to my Great Auntie May. May owned a flower shop in Los Angeles for over 50 years called Everthine Flowers. Her shop started with fresh flowers and eventually switched to silk flowers. Her shop was huge in character and beauty just like my Auntie May. That shop surrounds many of my childhood memories of visiting May. The rows and rows of high shelves which stored vases, containers, fillers and accents. May was the kind of Auntie who pinched your cheeks hard and hugged you even harder. You never questioned her love while she strongly encouraged me to eat seconds at dinner and then packed my pockets full of candies for the drive home. May was loving, strong, smart, caring and as she would say “a tough cookie”.

May Berns passed away on September 5th, 2010 at the age of 93.

The biggest event every year in the gem/bead industry here in the United States is the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show. This giant event takes over the whole city of Tucson, Arizona and can be completely overwhelming if not attacked with a plan. I have been traveling to Tucson for many years to attend this show. I learned the hard way a long time ago that you pack for a hike, good shoes, a bottle of water, snacks and a clear head. This year I was working the Nunn Design’s booth at the To Bead True Blue Show and had a great time. I saw a LOT of people from Minnesota. I guess we have the most beaders per capita then any where else in the country, maybe it’s the winter’s. I also met the awesome team from Beaducation, the very creative Kristal Wick, chatted it up with the ladies from Lilly Pilly Designs, had dinner with a wild crowd of lampworkers, partied with Interweave Press and so much more. On my day off I ventured to check out three other show. My photos are of friends new and old from my day off.
